Crystal Lake Cave

On the way home, we stopped at the Crystal Lake Cave, 5 miles south of Dubuque, Iowa.  Bob had been there a few years before and thought it was pretty cool.  After seeing it, Stacie liked it a lot too.  The tour is about 3/4 mile and takes approximately 45 minutes.  It is a living cave (the stalactites and stalagmites are still growing) with many beautiful formations.  There is also a small "lake" in the cave that you can see.  There are many types of rock formations in the cave, including some that are supposed to be rare as far as caves are concerned.

Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and has spent considerable time in the cave studying the rocks there.  He had been in many areas not included on the tour as well.  It was a good tour and a nice break on the way home.  The cave is open daily in the summer and on weekends in the spring and fall.  It's really nice to go through on a really hot day, since the temperature in the cave stays around 52 degrees year-round.
