Milwaukee Brewers Baseball

We are on a mission to collect souvenir balls from every major league ball park we go to and we wanted to see a game in Old County stadium before it was torn down.  Many famous players including Hammering Hank Aaron had played there so we wanted to see game there before it went away.  We were able to get good tickets that were pretty cheap ($14 each for the lower level seats near 3rd base) the day of the game.  That's an advantage of going to see a team that is struggling that year.

The coolest feature of the park is the brewer house.  When a Milwaukee Brewer hits a home run, the brewer comes out of the house and slides into the mug of beer that is under the keg tap.  When he lands in the mug, several white balloons (bubbles) go up in the air.  Not sure if they have something like this in mind for the new ballpark.  Hopefully they do because this was pretty cool.

The Brewer's House at County Stadium

We were there just 3 days after the huge crane known as big blue had fallen, killing 3 workers.

Wreckage of Big Blue and Miller Park, 3 days after it happened

You could see the wreckage from the right field seats.  It was pretty sobering to see that much twisted metal and mangled wreckage and know that some people lost their lives in the accident.

After walking around the park, you could see why they were replacing it.  It was like being in an old warehouse.  The aisles were narrow, there were a lot of beams and girders, and it was fairly run down.  We were amazed at the number of tailgaters in the parking lot before the game.  It looked like we were going to a football game, not a baseball game.  We ended up seeing the Brewers beat up on the Kansas City Royals 11-3.  There was a power outage late in the game that lasted for 45 minutes or so so we took off a little early.  We had a fun time though and were glad we had the opportunity to see a game in that park.  Someday we will go back so we can see the new Miller Park, which opens 2001.
