St. Augustine, Florida

We spent 4 nights at the Holiday Inn at St. Augustine Beach, just a couple miles south of St. Augustine.  We had intended on spending some quality beach time here too, but the weather didn't work out so we did more site seeing than we had planned.  Fortunately, the Oldest City provides many opportunities for that. Flagerler College, once the Ponce De Leon Hotel, built in the 1890s.

St. Augustine is the oldest continuous European settlement in the United States and everywhere you go, you are reminded of it, because they tell you.  We saw the Oldest House, the Oldest Wooden School House, the Fountain of Youth, the Castillo De San Marcos, took a ride on the Site Seeing Trains, visited the San Sabastian Winery, went to 3-D World, the Alligator Farm, the Lighthouse and did a lot of walking around the old city.

We really enjoyed our stay at St. Augustine.  We wish the weather would have been a little nicer so we could have had some good beach time, but we saw a lot of interested sites.  By the time we left, we were a little toured out though.  While we were there, the weather was generally overcast, windy and in the low to mid 70's.  One day in was cold and rained most of the day.

Thoughts and Recommendations

  • There are a lot of sites to see and you can be nickled and dimed to death here.  Go to the Visitors Center and get a coupon book and consider buying a discount pass that lets you into several places at a little bit of a discount.
  • Spend time walking around town to see the sites.  Many of the buildings are 150-200 years old.  It is very evident the city was Spanish for a long time.
  • The site seeing train was a good way to learn a lot about the city in a pretty short time.  There is a tour trolley that acts the same.  Both give you 3-day pass so you can hop on and ride around town that way.  Both have several stops so you can get on and off.
