Pikes Peak State Park

Pikes Peak State Park in Iowa is located near the town of
McGregor. We just made a brief stop due to time
restrictions. The park offers fantastic lookouts of the
Mississippi River. We stayed for about an hour,
checking out a couple of different views. The view is
incredible and we were glad we stopped.
The park offers campsites with restroom and shower
facilities, hiking and bike trails, and picnic shelters.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has a good page of
information on the park on their website at: www.state.ia.us/dnr/organiza/ppd/pikepeak.htm
Recommendations:
- We didn't check out the campsites, but based on the trails
and the proximity to the Mississippi River, it looks like a
fun place to camp.
- If nothing else, stop for an hour and check out the view
like we did. It's spectacular.

Did you
know, Pikes Peak State park is named for the famed
explorer Zebulon Pike. Pike had been sent by the federal
government to explore the area in 1805. He recognized
the park site as an excellent location for a fort. The
fort ended up in what is now Prairie du Chien, WI.
