White Tailed Deer

We saw these white-tailed deer in Smoky Mountain National Park in Tennessee.

Size

Males (bucks) get up to 3 feet tall at the shoulder and weigh up to 300 pounds.  Females weigh just over 200 pounds.

Range

White-tailed deer live throughout most of the United States except for the far Southwest.  There are several closely related subspecies of these deer.

Speed

White-tailed deer can reach top speeds up to 36 mph.

Diet

Deer graze on green grasses in the spring and summer and nuts and corn in the fall.   In the winter, deer eat buds and twigs from various types of trees.

Miscellaneous facts

Deer have a four part stomach and eat 5-9 pounds of food a day.

In recent years, deer have contributed to the spread of Lyme disease in humans.  The disease is transmitted by ticks, which are carried by the deer.
